Exchange of Opinions with the Korean Intellectual Property Association (KINPA)

On January 8, 2025, JIPA hold an online meeting to exchange opinions with the Korean Intellectual Property Association (KINPA).
From KINPA, participants included Director General Taejun Suh, Chair of the Landscape Committee Hyoung-Yong Wi, Member of the Trademark, Design, and Copyright Committee Ho-Joong Kim, Chair of the Planning and Coordination Committee Hyunjung Kim, among others.
From JIPA, participants included Chair of the Information Utilization Committee Keisuke Nagata, Chair of the Trademark Committee Takuya Tokuwaka, Chair of the International 3rd Committee Koji Terakawa, Executive Director Takeshi Ueno, Acting Secretary General Munehisa Matsumoto, among others. Approximately 30 members from both Japan and Korea took part in the exchange.
At the beginning, JIPA Executive Director Ueno and KINPA Director General Suh gave opening remarks, emphasizing that while JIPA and KINPA have interacted through forums such as the Five IP Offices Users Meeting, bilateral exchanges like this are equally significant. They reaffirmed the importance of such interactions and stated that it is crucial to continue fostering these interactions in the future.
Following the introductions, both organizations shared their initiatives on IP landscaping. JIPA¡Çs Information Utilization Committee presented its activities, while KINPA¡Çs Landscape Committee shared insights into its establishment and activities. Both sides explored possibilities for future collaboration.
Next, discussions focused on trademark and brand protection. Chair Tokuwaka delivered a presentation titled ¡ÈProtection of Trademark Rights and Countermeasures Against Counterfeits,¡É while Kim shared a case study on ¡ÈBrand Protection for K-Foods.¡É The two organizations exchanged views on the current state of online infringement and discussed brand protection strategies that companies should adopt.
Finally, Chair Terakawa of JIPA¡Çs International 3rd Committee and Chair Kim of KINPA¡Çs Planning and Coordination Committee provided a summary of the day¡Çs discussions. Despite the limited time, the meeting proved to be a valuable opportunity that paves the way for future exchanges.
