JIPA to the WIPO Conference on Innovation and Climate Change

The JIPA dispatched four members of its Environment Technology Package Promotion Project including Managing Director Yuichiro Kawamura to the Conference on Innovation and Climate Change held on July 11 and 12, 2012, in Geneva. The Conference was held by WIPO and attended by about 200 persons from various countries. The purpose of this Conference was to discuss the issue of ¡Èenvironment technology transfer and intellectual property¡É from three perspectives, i.e., innovation, technology transfer, and finance. This is one of the issues handled by the Conference of the Parties (COP).

In the Conference on Innovation and Climate Change, a panel discussion was held by the panelists from the UN, universities, research institutes in developing countries, and JIPA. The panelist from JIPA introduced consumer electronics companies¡Ç recycling technology and other corporate efforts to tackle environment problems and presented some example cases of technology transfer. The panelist from the UN commented that it is important to take into consideration the developmental stage of the country to which a technology is to be transferred and make appropriate preparations prior to full-scale investment. Other panelists also presented useful information and comments.

On July 13, WIPO held a stakeholder meeting at its headquarters concerning WIPO Green, which WIPO has been working to promote based on the GTPP (Green Technology Package Platform), which was proposed by JIPA in 2009. The meeting attendants checked the current progress status, identified issues, and exchanged opinions on the future schedule. In the meantime, developing countries have been complaining that intellectual property has been an impediment to their development. Believing that WIPO Green could be an effective solution, JIPA will continue its PR activities and cooperation for WIPO Green.
