JIPA Representatives to Vietnam and Indonesia

JIPA’s Asia Project sent a 9 member representative delegation to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, and Jakarta, Indonesia, from January 14 to 22, 2015. The dispatched delegation engaged in meetings with the following 10 intellectual property organizations. JIPA sent a delegation to Vietnam for the 2nd consecutive year and to Indonesia for the 1st time in 2 years. As the delegation members had met some of the Vietnamese and Indonesian participants in the meetings in Tokyo, they were able to have frank discussions on local topics.

The purpose of this visit was to present requests on IP systems and operations of both countries, which were compiled based on the field survey conducted targeting JIPA members last year. Specifically, the delegation requested the “enhancement of protection of famous trademarks,” “clarification of the partial designs system,” “publication of the examination guidelines” and improvement of search databases, etc. from the patent offices and also requested a “tightened crackdown on counterfeit goods” and “disclosure of data of seized goods” from customs.

Member companies are very interested in Vietnam and Indonesia as growing markets in ASEAN. In the urban areas in these countries, there are rows of high-rise buildings, condominium buildings and large commercial facilities, showing a development almost on a par with the central area of Tokyo. In addition, according to statistics, the average age of the population is between 20 and 30, and as if to prove this, people out in the street appeared to be full of vitality.
